For Sale: Orbit 21/18" Semi Mixed
By: David Hinsley/br>Email: dmhinsley@hotmail.com/br>Location: Portsmouth/br>Listing ends on: Wednesday 7th May 2025/br>Price: £320/br>Orbit Cycles handmade their bikes in Sheffield and had such a good reputation for tandems that when they ceased trading they were able to sell the name on to an outfit selling aluminium Tandems made in Taiwan. The lugged quality steel frame features an additional set of stays from the rear axle to the head tube to provide lateral rigidity more effectively than additional or oversized tubing. They also provide a handy hanging place for additional bottles or luggage. The frame also features an eccentric bottom bracket to allow adjustment of the front chain tension and fitments for the powerful cantilever brakes.
The bike is fitted with 21 speed mountain bike style gears (new rear chain) providing an adequate range for all but the steepest hills and 26 inch 36 spoke wheels with 1.5/1.75 inch road tyres. Flat pedals are fitted with toeclips on the rear pair only as we found this best.
The size of this tandem is 21 inches (54cm) for the captain (front) and 18"/46cm for the Stoker (rear) giving a height range about 5'7" to 5'11" up front and 5'5" to 5'10" at the rear. There is more scope for adjustment at the rear although the suspension seat post might need to be removed to facilitate a small rider. A smaller child could be accommodated by fitting an extra set of "Kiddy Cranks" above the normal set and some handlebar modifications (not included but ask for advice).
I bought this tandem from a couple in Milton Keynes who I believe bought it new from Roy Pink Cycles and apart from a few rides leading up to a short tour of Normandy it has occupied a my hallway ever since with just the occasional inflation of tyres. Unfortunately it has a few paint chips from fellow hall dwelling bikes.
