The Way of the Roses is one of the most popular routes across the UK

This set of rides were completed in 2024 and utilised cycle camping where we went both ways over 7 days, an average of about 50 miles a day.

I have marked all the campsites along the way, some of the B&B's (on the route) and many of the cafes and placs of interest

There are a variety of references

Cicerone produce a guidebook https://www.cicerone.co.uk/cycling-the-way-of-the-roses

There is a good website at http://wayoftheroses.info/

This website is a little more modern than the above, though finding places to camp is tough https://www.wayoftheroses.co.uk/

The Rides

1: Morecambe to Ocrabar (E)

Morecambe to Ocrabar Campsite You start at the seafront in Morecambe where there is a sign and a placard. Head away from the coast passing the shopping centre and using the cyclepaths. Quickly you join a good and long cyclepath that takes you all the way to Lancaster (there area lot of CCTV cameras on poles) At Lancaster, cross the attractive Millenium bridge and carry on along the cyclepath which follows an old railway path. Part of it is shared with cars/vans so take care. Between 2 viaducts g more ...

2: Ocrabar Farm to Howarth Farm (E)

Ocrabar Farm to Howarth Farm Starting at Ocrabar Farm Campsite, the ride climbs a quite valley passing Smearsett Scar on the right, follwed by a descent into Settle. In 2024, Settle was filled with flowerpot models outside lots of houses and very good they were as well. All the services are in the centre of town where there are several cafes, we used the excellent bike shop/book shop/cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. There is a booths supermarket in town Heading out of Settle, you head over more ...

3: Howarth Farm to Linton Lock Marina (E)

Howarth Farm to Linton Lock Marina The day starts with a steep climb out of the valley (Wharfedale), again look back at the view. The road then runs to the B6265. This is a busier section agate as far as the traffic goes. The road is quite exposed and can be windy. There are a few small descents but it gradually climbs. You will pass Stump Cross Caverns on the right, before entering Greenhow. As you enter the mounds on the right are Lead Workings dating from Roman Times. This area has seen a lot more ...

4: Linton Lock Marina to Field House (E)

Linton Lock Marina to Field House Campsite Heading out, you quickly pass through the grounds of Benington House. There is a cafe here but it's a bit early. After yesterday it's flatter. Taking the route into and through York shows just how far things are improving. The initiall cyclepath is wiggly then follows the river on an occasionally quite wide cycle path. This is a shorter day, giving time to explore York. In our case we chose the National Rail Museum which is well signed for bikes and has more ...

5: Field House to Bridlington (E)

Field House Campsite to Bridlington The last stretch is straightforward as much id downhill, at least at the start. From the campsite there is a descent where the views ahead are extensive. The cycling is non descript as you pass through Driffield and after the past few days can feel quite quick. You will though be criss crossing the railway a number of times and in two places where you need to open and close gates to cross the tracks, a good example of using minor lanes. At Burton Agnes it's wo more ...
